Confetti Cotton Solids Sweet Nothings Quilt

The Sweet Nothings pattern is my first dive into the pattern designing world. Today I am highlighting the cover quilt that was made with Riley Blake Confetti Cottons. Although this is the cover quilt, I did not actually make it first. I wrote the whole pattern assuming I would use these fabrics on the cover, which means I made ALL of the illustrations with these colors. I didn’t actually make the quilt until about two weeks before the release! What could go wrong right?

The pattern was officially released on February 10, 2023! You can now purchase it in my shop or on Etsy.

The Sweet Nothings Pattern

The Sweet Nothings pattern is made up of two blocks. One includes a sawtooth star with a heart and the other has a framed square. They are both 9-patch blocks within 9-patch blocks. When the two blocks are sewn together, it creates a secondary diamond pattern.

It is an intermediate pattern because there is a lot of seam matching which may get frustrating for beginner quilter. However, if you are a beginner quilter that feels like taking on a challenge, I think this would be totally doable.

Quilt Sizes

This pattern has two quilt sizes:

  • Baby size - 36” x 36”

  • Throw Size - 60” x 60”

Larger sizes can easily be made by making additional blocks. You could also add additional blocks to the bottom of the quilt to make it rectangular, if you are not a fan of square quilts.

Fabric Requirements

I have included fat quarter cutting instructions so you can use your favorite fat quarter bundle or yardage. You can even mix and match and use fat quarters for parts of the quilt, and yardage for others. You can very easily pull from your stash which makes this a fun stash buster quilt!

Piecing Techniques

While piecing this quilt, you will strip piece, make four flying geese at a time, snowball corners, and match a lot of seams. The flying geese do not touch each other, so you don’t have to worry about lining up those points. I have also made sure the geese come out a little big, so you have room to trim them down to the perfect size.

Riley Blake Confetti Cotton Solids

This was my first time using Riley Blake Confetti Cottons and I really liked them! The colors were exactly was I was looking for and I was able to find them at a local shop. They seemed to fray a little more than my go-to solids from Art Gallery Fabric. Overall, I have no complaints and would use them again! One caveat, I haven’t washed this and I do not pre-wash. If there is significant fabric bleeding, my opinion might change.

I wrote this pattern while I was in the Quilter’s Candy Pattern Writing course, and a goal of that course was to work on our branding and color palette. I picked the fabrics for the cover quilt based on the mood board I created during this class. What do you think? Did I aced it or miss the mark?

Oh…and here are the fabric names!

Fabric 1: Riley Green

Fabric 2: Cloud

Fabric 3: Stargazer

Fabric 4: Canyon Rose

Fabric 5: Wisteria (this is part of the Crayola collection that is no longer available)

Background: Latte

Longarm Quilting

I used a design called Sweet Orange Peel designed by Leisha of Quilting It. I love the texture it added and the roundness of the design complimented the sharp points of the quilt. I also thought it looked like lace, which added a bit of softness and femininity to the quilt. The backing was a print from Art Gallery Fabrics, but I have no idea what collection it is from. I tend to grab bolts of fabric I like without really paying attention to the name of the fabric.

Photo Shoot

I tried to get some pretty quilts in the wild photos, but it was way cold and windy. Like 20 degrees F cold. My husband came out to Gardner Village with me and we took pictures as fast as possible on a Sunday (when it was closed). Gardner Village is a cute little shopping center that houses The Pine Needle quilt shop, where I purchased all my fabric.
